Summary[]

It's the 7th of July, and Haruhi decides the SOS Brigade should celebrate Tanabata. The members write their wishes down on tanzaku (rectangular pieces of colored paper) and hang them on a bamboo tree. The gods who grant the wishes, Orihime and Hikoboshi, are represented by the stars Vega and Altair respectively, and Haruhi points out that because these stars are respectively 25 and 16 light years from Earth and it is impossible to travel faster than the speed of light, their wishes will take 25 and 16 years to be granted.

Nagato and Asahina each leave a tanzaku with Kyon; Asahina's asks him to stay with her after everyone leaves. Asahina asks Kyon to travel back in time with her. They arrive in a park, exactly three years ago. Asahina falls unconscious and the adult version of her says Kyon must carry the unconscious Asahina with him and assist a person at the school nearby. This person proves to be young Haruhi, who is breaking into her school.

Haruhi orders Kyon to draw symbols on the school grounds with a line marker, which he realizes are the quad scribbles Taniguchi told him about. After he finishes, she asks Kyon whether he thinks aliens, time travelers, espers and sliders exist; he answers affirmatively, except for sliders. To avoid causing a paradox, he remains anonymous, giving his name as John Smith and claiming Asahina is his narcoleptic sister. However, Haruhi recognizes his North High uniform and becomes further interested when he mentions knowing someone like her at North High. Haruhi heads home.

Kyon wakes Asahina. Her TPDD, the device she uses to travel through time, is missing, so they cannot return to Kyon's present. Kyon realizes the TPDD must have been taken by the adult Asahina and looks at Nagato's tanzaku, which has written on it the symbols Haruhi had him draw. They find the younger Nagato at her apartment, gaining entrance by introducing themselves as acquaintances of Haruhi Suzumiya. Nagato freezes time inside her bedroom until the present arrives, allowing Kyon and Asahina to return to their correct time without having to wait and age three years. She tells Kyon the symbols on her tanzaku say "I am here." Startled by her ability to translate, he asks if the symbols Haruhi composed are in an alien language, but Nagato does not answer.

Asahina says she cannot answer Kyon's questions about why they helped young Haruhi because she is just a trainee who only became involved because Haruhi chose her for the SOS Brigade. The next day at school, Kyon finds Haruhi still melancholy from the day before because she has been remembering the events of Tanabata from three years ago. At the SOS Brigade meeting, he discusses with Koizumi and Nagato the contradiction between Asahina's statement that the past and future have no connection and the likelihood that his conversation with Haruhi three years ago caused her decision to attend North High.
