Her Confusion is the fourteenth episode of The Disappearance of Nagato Yuki-chan. The episode is to a large extent a remake of the Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya episode "Bamboo Leaf Rhapsody".

Plot[]

As Yuki returns to her normal life, Kyon begins avoiding her. She is concerned upon hearing about her other self, and asks Ryoko whether she prefers the old Yuki or the new Yuki. Ryoko says this is a hurtful question, but nonetheless answers that she loves them both equally.

Haruhi and Koizumi return to the Literature Club after their prolonged absence. Haruhi makes plans for everyone to celebrate Tanabata, telling Kyon and Itsuki to find a bamboo branch for the occasion. After everyone writes their wishes, Haruhi confronts Kyon privately, saying she realizes something happened to him and deduces that the other Yuki must have confessed love for him. Kyon says it shouldn't matter because Yuki doesn't even remember it. Seeing a parallel to how Kyon does not remember helping her write a message to space during Tanabata four years ago, Haruhi tells Kyon that even if she does not remember it, it doesn't change the fact that it is important to him. She reflects that Kyon's taking her pursuit of supernatural beings seriously, both at their first meeting and during high school, saved her from falling into despair.

Differences from manga version[]

DisNYHerCo4

The rare sight of Koizumi striking Kyon, a moment seen only in the anime adaptation.

This episode is considerably expanded from the original manga story, adding a number of sequences and even entire scenes which do not appear anywhere in the manga. The scene in the classroom where Kyon asks to copy Asakura's school work, for example, is completely new.

More significantly, the scene where Yuki is reunited with Asakura is not in the manga (apart from a one-panel flashback while the two of them are doing laundry). Kyon and Yuki's preceding elevator ride is also new.

While the scene where Haruhi enters the clubroom and announces they will be celebrating Tanabata technically appears in the manga, it takes up just two panels. The anime expanded the scene to include Kyon, Asakura, and Yuki hanging out before Haruhi's entrance, Kyon and Haruhi repeating their conversation about Tanabata from the original universe (in "Bamboo Leaf Rhapsody"), Asakura discovering that Yuki knew in advance about Haruhi's Tanabata plans, and Kyon's awkward parting with Yuki.

The scene where Kyon and Koizumi are attacked by mosquitoes does not appear in the manga, which instead cuts directly from Haruhi sending them into the bamboo field to their returning with numerous mosquito bites.

The original manga story ends as Haruhi and Kyon step outside to meet the rest of the Literature Club. The anime adds on the sequence where Kyon gives Haruhi his dumplings.

In the manga, in addition to giving his name as "John Smith", Kyon tells Haruhi he is a first-year high school student (an apparent reference to the fact that in the original series's version of this scene, Kyon was a first-year high school student instead of a middle school student).
