Mr. Okabe (Okabe-sensei, 岡部), a young teacher, is Kyon and Haruhi's homeroom teacher, in both their first and second year at North High. In his first year, he taught Class 1-5. Okabe is viewed as hot-blooded.
He is in charge of the Handball Club, having been a fan since he was young, and participated in handball tournaments at college.

According to The Observation of Haruhi Suzumiya, Okabe really cares for his students, and performs lunchtime instruction for poorly-performing students such as Kyon and Taniguchi.
